Title: From Zero to SPECfp2000, Porting Debian GNU/Linux to IA-64 Speaker: Bdale Garbee, HP Linux CTO Abstract: This talk tells the story of how Debian GNU/Linux was ported to some of the world's fastest computers. Hearing this story helps explain how Debian came to be HP's internal Linux development platform, and provides some insight into how HP works with the Open Source community. Some of the lessons learned during this and other ports will be explained, leading to the conclusion that solving portability problems improves overall software quality. Bio: Bdale is a former Debian Project Leader, and as HP Linux CTO helps to ensure Linux will work well on future HP systems. His background includes many years of both UNIX internals and embedded systems work. He helped jump-start ports of Debian GNU/Linux to 5 architectures other than i386. When Bdale isn't busy keeping his basement computer farm full of oddball systems running Linux working, he enjoys amateur radio... particularly helping build amateur satellites.
